Double O Organics Diverts Food Waste and Feeds the Earth with Tiger

Double O Organics is a Monett, Missouri based environmental services company that is passionately devoted to helping create a more sustainable future. One way it does so is by helping food and pet food manufacturers decrease their environmental impact by diverting their food waste from landfills by transforming it into compost, which is sold in bulk to farmers as a soil amendment.

What led them to the Tiger HS-55 depackaging system?

“We were offered a contract for canned pet food,” says Double O Organics owner Adam Wormington, “and felt with this contract and another one, we could create a viable business with the purchase of the Tiger. We knew there were other machines on the market but thought the Tiger was the best for our situation.”

Double O purchased their Tiger depack system in Summer 2023 and depackaging started October 1, 2023. 

“The main objective was to separate the organic from the packaging,” Adam says. “This allows the organic portion to be composted and the packaging to be recycled. This greatly reduces the amount of waste going into landfills – easily 85-90%.”

And how is the Tiger handling the metal, cardboard, and plastic packaging?

“Most packaging materials are not a problem,” says Adam, “but we do try to minimize the thick cardboard since it takes longer to process. Cardboard and paper waste are used in our compost windrows for carbon. Some metals are sent for further recycling, and depending on the type, plastic may be sent back to the manufacturer or as a last resort, to the landfill.”

Double O Organics’ typical food waste input varies from several months past its expiration date to food waste that hasn’t expired but has other quality problems. And quantity? According to Adam, “we currently have half a dozen customers with room for growth and are processing 600 tons a week with room to increase.”

That’s a lot of throughput for a machine the size of a pickup truck! And it’s a bit more efficient than how Double O was processing their food waste before they added the Tiger HS-55: “Some manually,” says Adam, “and some with retooled pieces of farm and industrial equipment.”

Tiger depack systems separate organic waste from packaging in a small footprint, in a single pass. It can feed, separate, process, and extract organics into a wet or dry output with the flip of a switch. This makes it ideal for processing bulk commercial waste or pre- or post-consumer food waste into compost, animal feed or as feedstock in anaerobic digestion biogas production.

But the bottom line for Double O Organics is that their Tiger helps them convert food waste into cashflow.

“The Tiger has significantly increased our business,” Adam says. “We have taken on new customers with different products than we had before, and these new vendors have increased our revenue by well over 100%.”
